The Art of Paper. Quilling

Quilling is an art that involves the use of strips of paper that are running and stick together to form a decorative design.
The paper is wrapped with a kind of stick to create a basic form or model (coil shape). The shapes created are gathered so that you create a new form like flowers, leaves, and a variety of ornamental patterns.

Some sources suggest that this kind of art has been practiced in the first time in ancient Egypt. And was taken in sec. XVI and XVII century, in France and Italy when the ladies of high society revived this stil. We don’t know exactly when it started the process, but it is said that during the Renaissance, nuns and monks used quilling to decorate the covers from religious books. Many sources say that they used gold strips. Later, as the material was much harder to find, it was replaced with strips of paper.
Today, when technology has evolved this art had preserved something with that practiced by Princess Elizabeth of Britain, Joseph Bramah (famous stylist), Mr Delanz (pioneer in the art of using paper as the base material). Quilling often mimic the “architectural embroidery” of those days. About Quilling Jean Austen wrote in the novel “Sense and Sensibility” and the Bronte sisters in their novels. This art was practiced by women from the high society for achieving outstanding works that adorn baskets work, buffets, cabinet, made picture frames. In the 19th and 20th century there appeared the first photos of quilling masterpieces. In the 18th century, the art of quilling exceeded religion and became known and used in Europe, and is practiced mostly by people wealthy or noble. It is said that there were few schools that teach such a thing among other artistic topics. Many examples can be found in the design of handbags for women, the paintings, frames, jewelry boxes and on many other things, depends on the imagination.
Over the years, this art has suffered transformations using other techniques and materials, and now is found on all continents becoming very popular due to the affordable costs  for everyone.
Paper-rolling, Filigree and Quilling are all names that have been given to this craft in its long history. The art has become increasingly popular and can be found numerous works of art in galleries worldwide.
Quilling is the art that can be practiced by both young and old people. And has many benefits because: involves patience, motor skills, creativity, 3D vision form and is a pleasant way to spend your free time.

Arta din hartie. Quilling.

Când Quilling-ul imita deseori ”broderia arhitecturala” a acelor timpuri.
Despre quilling scria si Jean Austen in romanul “ Ratiune si simtire” precum si surorile Bronte in romanele lor.
